Menstrual cramps, heavy flow, and PMS symptoms can make periods feel like a monthly battle. Add to that cold sores, digestive issues, sore joints and headaches, it’s really hard to function and can often impact work and social life, family life and other relationships.
While many women turn to conventional medicine, homeopathy offers remedies that match your unique symptom picture and help restore your body’s natural balance.
This guide outlines common homeopathic remedies for a wide range of symptoms which may afflict you during your period. Because there are so many symptoms that can arise during a cycle and we’re all so unique, we’ve created this as a list of remedies with just a few indications. You might want to do a bit more research to see what suits you. Try and find a remedy which fits all of your symptoms (or as much as possible of the overall picture) , rather than taking a handful of remedies for each symptom. Best outcome is always with the most indicated remedy for your individual picture.
If you have a more serious condition you may find remedies to give you relief of the acute symptoms each month, but your best option here is to consult with an experienced homeopath who can individualise remedies and solutions for you.
You will find most of the remedies listed in the single remedy category in the store, but if you don’t find what you want you can go to Special Request – Single Remedies to order.
While there are many more remedies than we’ve listed here, a few “hormonal” remedies in your box can really help with smoothing and regulating that time of the month.
And as always, if symptoms don’t improve or persist and you are really struggling, see your healthcare practitioner. Sometimes it’s about more than just the periods, with many other factors implicated or perhaps some detoxing being required.
A note on what and how
Less is always more in homeopathy, because we are stimulating the system to work harder to do the job it’s already trying to do for you. The body always wants to maintain or return to balance. If we have symptoms, we’re out of balance. Sometimes it’s not able to achieve this balance or homeostasis which is when you need some support, in this case in the form of remedies.
We’re not working with a nutritional supplement to build up physical levels, we’re working with a dynamic stimulus, similar to the way accupuncture works, to bring balance. It may take one dose or it may take several doses. But if you’re not having any change after 5 doses (for pain, bleeding, etc), your remedy is likely incorrect. Call in the professional homeopath at this point!
If you’re not sure how much to take and how often, you can hop over to the FAQs and have a read on this. There is also a little summary at the end of the post.

Emotional & Mental Symptoms
Moods such as anxiety, depression or irritability are common symptoms for some during the menstrual cycle and often a good place to start with choosing a remedy. Balance the mood and often this will help with the physical symptoms, if the remedy covers the whole picture.

How to Choose a Remedy for your Menstrual Symptoms
A little primer on how to choose a remedy may be useful as homeopathy is a different modality altogether from conventional medicine and things like naturopathy, although some naturopaths do use homeopathic remedies.
Homeopathy works on the principle of “like cures like”—meaning the remedy is chosen not just for the condition (menstrual pain), but for the unique way your body expresses it. This is why five people with period cramps may receive completely different remedies.
When selecting a remedy, try and find the one remedy that covers the whole picture, rather than taking a handful of remedies. You can think about:
Main Concerns
Pain: Is it cramping, stabbing, dragging, or throbbing?
Bleeding: Is it heavy, light, clotty, bright red, or dark?
PMS: Are your main symptoms emotional, physical, or both?
Location: Does the discomfort stay in one place, or travel to your back, thighs, or pelvis?
Timing
Do symptoms appear before, during, or after menstruation?
Are they linked to ovulation or specific times of day?
Better/Worse Factors (Modalities)
Does warmth, cold, rest, movement, or pressure improve things?
Are symptoms triggered or worsened by stress, emotions, weather, or diet?
Accompanying Symptoms
Pain: Nausea, digestive upset, urinary urgency.
Heavy bleeding: Weakness, dizziness, pelvic heaviness.
PMS: Irritability, tearfulness, food cravings, breast tenderness, bloating.
💡 Tip: If one remedy fits your overall symptom picture fairly well, it’s worth trying three or four times daily for up to three days during acute pain. If it works well, don’t take another dose until you need to, ie the pain returns.
If symptoms persist, change, or worsen, consult a qualified homeopath or healthcare provider.
Supporting Menstrual Health Naturally
Alongside the right remedy, these holistic self-care tips may help:
- Apply a warm compress or hot pack to back an/or belly to ease cramps.
- Castor oil packs can be helpful.
- Rub magnesium oil on your belly, back and thighs.
- Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet rich in magnesium (leafy greens, nuts, seeds).
- Avoid sugar as it feeds the inflammation.
- Practice gentle movement—like stretching or walking—to encourage circulation.
- Use relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation to reduce stress.
Final Thoughts
Every woman’s menstrual cycle is unique, and so is her remedy. Homeopathy can offer relief when chosen carefully according to individual symptoms — not just the diagnosis.
For recurring, severe, or complex symptoms, seek the guidance of a qualified and experienced homeopath who can select a constitutional remedy tailored to your overall health and emotional state.
